Lahemaa National Park
Lahemaa National Park was established in 1971 and became the first national park in the Soviet Union. Its location is roughly 70 km in eastern direction from Tallinn. Many endangered species like bears live in the park. Some corners of the parks can be reached by car while others are open only seasonally or are totally restricted. The Park now covers roughly 725 km² of which 250 km² are on the sea. Since the very beginning the park size has been increased by over 60%. A large part of the park is made up by beautifully grown forest that for the most part can be walked through. There are some nice lakes like Kämsu and Lohja in the park and also some beautiful streams and waterfalls like Joaveski that are nice to see. You wont find too many sandy beaches, but there are some around Vosu, Loksa and Vergi.
A good starting point is Palmse where you can get information about the park and which routes are most advisable if you are traveling without someone who knows the park. You may also stay here as it is also a hotel.
